Saya is a Japanese high school student. Last summer, she visited the U.S. to study English.

One day Saya went to a sandwich shop. There were many kinds of bread, vegetables and cheese in front of her, but she didn’t know how to order sandwiches. Moreover, she couldn’t speak English well at that time. She became nervous.

Suddenly, a man waiting behind Saya said, “Are you Japanese? Do you need help? I speak a little Japanese.” “Really? Yes, please,” Saya answered. She told the man the foods she wanted to choose in Japanese. Then, the man talked to the shop owner in English. Finally, she was able to get a good sandwich. She really appreciated the man.

Now, she is back in Japan. She wants to do something good for foreign tourists. She thinks that there are many people who are nervous just like her in the U.S. She is looking forward to paying it forward.

Hello, everyone. My name is Misaki.

I am a member of the volunteer club. Our club is doing various activities to improve people’s lives in developing countries.

Do you use handkerchiefs every day? We collect handkerchiefs that students don’t use anymore. We use them to make small bags. Then, we send them to some schools in Africa. The children there put the things they need for school in the bags, such as pencils and notebooks. I think that our activities are beneficial to both our community and the children in Africa. First, recycling handkerchiefs is good for our environment. Second, we can improve children’s school life in Africa.

I would like to keep trying various activities to make our planet better to live.
